Ceasefire in Southern Gaza as Egypt, Israel and the US Reach Agreement

A ceasefire begins in southern Gaza at 0600 GMT (11:30 am Monday, Indian Standard Time) along with the re-opening of the Rafah border crossing. This ceasefire is due to an agreement between Egypt, Israel and the US.

The duration of the ceasefire is not clear but it is expected that it will continue for a few hours.

Rafah, which is on the border between Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula and Hamas-governed Gaza, is the only crossing into the territory not controlled by Israel.

Aid trucks from Egyptian NGOs waited for permission to reach Rafah.

The Israeli military and the U.S. Embassy in Israel are mum about the ceasefire. Hamas also said they have received no confirmation from the Egyptian side about intentions to open the crossing.
