2023 Nobel Prize in Economics Awarded to Claudia Goldin for Women’s Labour Insights

Stockholm: The Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for 2023 has been awarded to Claudia Goldin for her research on women in the labour market.

Since 1969, a total of 54 Nobel Prizes in Economic Sciences have been granted, with 25 laureates receiving the award individually. Notably, only two women, Elinor Ostrom in 2009 and Esther Duflo in 2019 have previously received this prestigious honour in the field of Economic Sciences. Claudia Goldin now joins this esteemed group as the third woman to be recognized in this field.

The Nobel Prize 2023 announcements, which began on October 2, have concluded with the final announcement of the year in the field of Economic Sciences. These announcements followed those in medicine, physics, chemistry, literature, and peace, which were made last week.

Last year’s Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences was awarded to U.S.-based economists Ben Bernanke, Douglas Diamond, and Philip Dybvig. Their research, conducted in the early 1980s, significantly enhanced our understanding of the role of banks in the economy, particularly during financial crises. Their insights proved invaluable during the 2008-09 financial crisis and the subsequent Covid-19 pandemic.
