Death Toll in Puri Chandan Yatra Explosion Rises to 11

Puri: The devastating firecracker explosion that rocked Puri during Lord Jagannath’s Chandan Yatra has claimed two more lives, bringing the death toll to 11, as confirmed by the State Government’s Health and Family Welfare Department.

Nineteen victims are currently battling critical injuries and receiving treatment in hospitals across Puri, Bhubaneswar, and Cuttack. The Puri Collector has ensured swift action, initiating ex-gratia payments of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of the deceased.

The incident, which unfolded on Wednesday night, stemmed from the ignition of a large stockpile of firecrackers near Narendra Pond. According to reports, local youths were bursting firecrackers to celebrate the occasion, sparking concerns about the lack of proper permits and safety protocols.

The massive explosion left over 40 people injured, sending shockwaves through the crowd gathered for the festivities. Puri police have registered a case and are investigating the cause of the incident.
