Ex-Army Chief General Sundararajan Padmanabhan Passes Away in Chennai

Chennai: General Sundararajan Padmanabhan, the 20th Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army, passed away in Chennai. General Padmanabhan retired on December 31, 2002, after more than four decades of service.

Born on December 5, 1940, in Trivandrum, Kerala, General Padmanabhan served the Indian Army for over 43 years, retiring as Chief of Army Staff. He remained in the top post from September 30, 2000, to December 31, 2002.

An alumnus of the prestigious Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC) in Dehradun and the National Defence Academy (NDA) in Khadakwasla, Pune, General Padmanabhan was commissioned into the Regiment of Artillery on December 13, 1959.

He was known as “Paddy” in Army circles.
