Hirakud Water Level on the Rise Increasing Flood Threat in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: There is a rapid rise in water level in the reservoir of the Hirakud Dam Sambalpur district because of heavy rains in the upper catchment area of the Mahanadi river.

According to information provided by the office of the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC), the water level in the dam stood at 615.21 feet at 8.00 am on Friday.

At present the inflow into the dam is 3.33 lakh cusec, while the outflow is 0.66 lakh cusec. Out of the 98 sluice gates, only two are open now. Opening more sluice gates due to extra inflow into the reservoir may aggravate the flood situation in the state.

At 6 am, the water level at the reservoir stood at 614.60 feet. The inflow and outflow were 4,32,808 cusecs and 67,690 cusecs respectively at that time.
