World Cup 2023, IND vs SL: Fifties From Gill, Kohli & Iyer Power India To 357/8; Madushanka Takes 5

Mumbai: India posted a mammoth 357 for 8 against Sri Lanka in their World Cup match here on Thursday.

Key contributors to India’s innings included Virat Kohli, who scored 88 runs off 94 balls, Shubman Gill with 92 off 92 balls, and Shreyas Iyer, who played an aggressive innings of 82 runs off 56 balls. Ravindra Jadeja’s quick 35 runs off 24 balls further bolstered India’s score.

Left-arm quick Dilshan Madushanka stood out as the top bowler for Sri Lanka with impressive figures of five wickets for 80 runs in his 10-over spell. The early loss of captain Rohit Sharma for just 4 runs was a setback for India, but Kohli and Gill’s strong partnership helped India maintain their advantage.

Sri Lanka got off to a promising start when Dilshan Madushanka dismissed Rohit Sharma with just the second ball of the match. Sri Lankan seamers, including Dushmantha Chameera, troubled the Indian batsmen in the initial overs. Gill found his rhythm with a boundary, and a missed catch opportunity by Charith Asalanka in the fifth over allowed him to continue his innings. In the sixth over, Chameera also missed a chance for a catch on his follow-through when Kohli produced another leading edge.

Brief scores: India: 357/8 in 50 overs (Virat Kohli 88, Shubman Gill 92, Shreyas Iyer 82; Dilshan Madhushanka 5/80).
