Maharashtra landslide: At Least 22 Killed, 86 Missing

Mumbai: Till now the landslide at Irshalwadi village in Maharashtra’s Raigad district has claimed at least 22 lives and 86 villagers are still missing. The rescue operation continued in the area on Saturday for the third day.

Irshalwadi, a tribal village situated on a hill slope under Khalapur tehsil was devastated by a massive landslide on Wednesday night. With recovery of six more bodies on Friday, the number of deaths in this landslide reached 22. The dead included nine men, nine women and four children.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other government agencies are involved in the rescue operation.

At least 17 of 48 houses in the village were fully or partially buried under the landslide debris. According to local administration, 86 of the 229 villagers were still missing.

Following the incident, the Maharashtra government has decided to shift residents of all landslide-prone areas in the state to safer locations, said CM Eknath Shinde in the assembly.
