Maldives President Muizzu Meets Chinese Counterpart Xi Jinping Amid Diplomatic Row with India

Beijing: Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu met with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping on Wednesday, amidst a diplomatic row between Maldives and India triggered by offensive remarks against Prime Minister Modi. Muizzu, known for his pro-China stance, received a red carpet welcome and a 21-gun salute. Talks between Xi and Muizzu were held, but details were not disclosed.

The diplomatic row with India arose after Maldivian ministers’ offensive remarks led to Indian tourist cancellations, impacting the nation’s tourism sector. Muizzu, seeking to strengthen ties with China, appealed for increased Chinese tourist visits, emphasizing China’s pre-COVID status as the Maldives’ top tourism market. He condemned derogatory comments, leading to the suspension of three deputy ministers.

During his visit, Muizzu praised China as a close ally and development partner. He highlighted the Belt and Road Initiative’s positive impact on Maldivian infrastructure, expressing commitment to implementing the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) signed in 2014. Despite delays by the previous administration, Muizzu emphasized the FTA’s importance in enhancing bilateral trade, particularly in increasing fish exports to China.

Bilateral trade in 2022 reached USD 451.29 million, with China’s exports dominating. Muizzu sought Chinese investments for 11 projects during the Maldives Investment Forum.
