Maldives Welcomes “Friendly” Chinese Spy Ship Amid Diplomatic Row with India

Male: The Maldives government has officially approved the docking of a Chinese “research vessel,” the Xian Yang Hong 03, in the capital city of Male next month. Despite its designation as a research ship, the Xiang Yang Hong 03 is widely suspected of being a Chinese spy vessel engaged in mapping the Indian Ocean floor for military purposes.

“The Maldives has always been a welcoming destination for vessels of friendly countries, and continues to host both civilian and military vessels making port calls for peaceful purposes…”

“Such calls enhance bilateral ties between the Maldives and partner countries and also demonstrate the centuries-old tradition of welcoming vessels from friendly countries…” the Maldives said.

The 4,300-ton research vessel is ostensibly involved in mapping the Indian Ocean floor, a task that can offer valuable data for anticipating natural disasters like underwater earthquakes. However, it also enables China to enhance its navigation capabilities in the region, particularly for submarines and submersible drones.

The decision to allow the Chinese vessel’s entry has raised eyebrows, with some interpreting it as a geopolitical shift by the Maldives away from New Delhi and towards Beijing.

This move coincides with a tense standoff between the Maldives and India over critical comments made by three Maldivian ministers about Indian Prime Minister Modi. President Mohamed Muizzu, elected on an “India Out” platform, recently visited China, signing 20 key agreements and elevating the bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Cooperation Partnership.

During the visit, President Muizzu urged China to boost tourism to the Maldives, seen as a direct snub to India, traditionally a major source of tourists.
