Man Behind Rashmika Mandanna Deepfaek Video Arrested by Delhi Police

New Delhi: Delhi police arrested the man responsible for actor Rashmika Mandanna’s deepfake video on Saturday. The accused was arrested from Andhra Pradesh. This deepfake video went viral in November 2023.

The concerned deepfake video used deepfake technology to transform a clip of British-Indian influencer Zara Patel into that of Mandanna.

Deepfake videos of Katrina Kaif, Amitabh Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra and even Sachin Tendulkar also have gone viral on the internet in recent weeks.

The aftermath of the viral deepfake video prompted the Centre to issue an advisory to social media platforms. New IT rules to curb the menace of deepfake will be notified by next week, said Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Tuesday.

“Government is very clear on the compliance of the advisory on deepfake issue, if we find that the advisory is not being followed by, we will follow it up with very clear, amended IT rules that we had notified,” Chandrasekhar said.

Deepfakes are a form of synthetic media crafted using artificial intelligence, employing sophisticated algorithms to manipulate both visual and audio elements. The term gained prominence in 2017 when a Reddit user introduced a platform for sharing manipulated videos.

Now deepfake technology has become a potential weapon for cybercriminals to disrupt and damage the reputation of individuals, companies, or even governments.
