Mizoram CM Zoramthanga Receives Twin Shocks, Loses Own Seat & Govt

Aizawl: Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga was defeated in the Aizawl East-1 constituency as his ruling Mizo National Front is set to lose the election.

Zoramthanga was defeated by Lalthansanga of the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM).

By 1 pm, the ZPM had won, or was leading in, 27 seats in Mizoram, while the MNF in 10. The BJP had two seats and the Congress none. The ZPM is well ahead of the majority mark set at 21 in the 40-member Mizoram Assembly.

CM Zoramthanga’s defeat follows Telangana CM K Chandrasekhar Rao’s defeat at the hands of BJP newcomer KV Ramana Reddy in Kamareddy. But KCR won from Gajwel to remain a MLA.

On Sunday, Mr Zoramthanga had declared himself confident his coalition would return to power by crossing the magic number of 21.

Meanwhile, ZPM leader and incoming Chief Minister Laludhoma has declared that he will meet the Governor tomorrow or the day after and the swearing-in will be within this month.

In 2018, the MNF won 26 seats and the ZPM eight. The Congress won five and the BJP one.
