Mortal Remains of Eminent Writer Gita Mehta consigned to Flames New Delhi

New Delhi: Last rites of eminent writer Gita Mehta, who happens to be the sister of Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik were performed at Lodhi crematorium ground in Delhi on Monday. Her son Aditya Singh Mehta lighted the funeral pyre in the presence of all family members. Geeta Mehta breathed her last on September 16 in Delhi.

She was former Chief Minister Biju Patnaik’s elder daughter. Born in 1943 to Biju Patnaik and Gyan Patnaik in Delhi. After her initial education in India, she attended the University of Cambridge in UK. She is best remebered for her books like Karma Cola, Snake and Ladders, A River Sutra, Raj and The Eternal Ganesha. She was married to a renowned American publisher, late Sonny Mehta.

Mehta was selected for India’s fourth highest civilian award the Padma Shri in 2019, which she declined for political reasons.  She has produced and directed 14 television documentaries for UK, European, and US networks. During the years 1970–1971 she was the war correspondent for the US television network NBC. She covered the Bangladesh War. Her documentary movies include  Bangladesh revolution, Dateline Bangladesh, which accolades in both India and abroad.
