Pakistan Elections: Nawaz Sharif Claims Victory Despite Falling Short of Majority

Islamabad: Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif claimed victory in Pakistan’s national elections on Friday, asserting that his political party has emerged as the single largest party in the election and will discuss forming a coalition government.

Sharif refrained from divulging the exact number of seats his party had clinched, as the vote count was still in progress for the remaining seats out of the 265 in contention. The latest update from the election commission indicated that his Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) had secured 61 seats, falling short of the 133 seats required to independently form a government.

While acknowledging that his party lacks the requisite seats for sole governance, Sharif announced that his deputies would engage with leaders from other parties, including former president Asif Ali Zardari of the Pakistan Peoples Party, to deliberate on forming a coalition administration.
