New Bridge Collapses in Manipur, Truck Falls Into River Killing One

Imphal: One person was killed as a truck fell into the Imphal river when a newly constructed bridge over the river collapsed on Sunday morning.

The incident occurred in the Wangoi police station limits in Imphal West district.

The truck loaded with firewood was crossing the newly constructed bailey bridge, when it collapsed. The truck fell into the river with four people inside.

While three people managed to jump out of the truck, the driver could not come out of the drowning truck and died.

The Manipur Minister of Municipal Administration, Housing and Urban Development Y Khemchand said that the bridge may have collapsed due to “technical defects” and has ordered an enquiry into the incident.

He said, the bridge would be reconstructed soon and stringent action would be taken if anyone is found guilty based on the enquiry report.

The same bridge had collapsed twice earlier. But no casualties were reported in those incidents.
