28 New Districts Sought in Odisha, Minister Responds to Queries

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has been inundated with petitions seeking the creation of a staggering 28 new districts. From established towns like Padampur and Kantabanji to upcoming areas like Rairangpur and Khiching, the demands span the length and breadth of Odisha.

Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Sudam Marndi confirmed the petitions in the Assembly, responding to a query from Congress MLA Santosh Singh Saluja. The list includes potential new districts like:

  • Western Odisha: Padampur, Dharmagarh, Kalahandi (West), Bonai, Rourkela, Kantabanji
  • Central Odisha: Talcher, Pallahara, Bhubaneswar, Ghumusar, Angul (Rushikulya)
  • Southern Odisha: Berhampur, Bhanjanagar, Ganjam (Chandikhol), Nayagarh (Athagarh), Baliguda, Gajapati (Anandpur), Sundargarh (Nilgiri)
  • Coastal Odisha: Soro, Balasore (Jaleswar), Puri (Nimapara), Rayagada (Gunupur)

However, the path to new districts isn’t smooth sailing. The Orissa High Court has recently cautioned the government against finalizing any such decisions without its consent. This adds a layer of legal complexity to the already intricate process, which involves feasibility studies, financial considerations, and public consultations.

Despite the hurdles, the overwhelming number of petitions reflects a strong desire for improved governance and administrative efficiency. Proponents argue that smaller districts would bring the administration closer to the people, facilitating faster development and addressing local needs effectively.
