Serial Cheater of Women Through Matrimonial Site Nabbed; Married 5, In Touch with 49 More

Bhubaneswar: A 36-year-old conman involved in cheating several women on the pretext of marriage was arrested by the Commissionerate Police on Saturday.

The fraudster was identified as Satyajit Samal from Jajpur. He used to pose as an Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer on a matrimonial website to trap women. He was mostly targeting divorcees and widows.

According to police sources, his modus operandi was to chat with women on the website to gain their trust. Then he was asking for cash and vehicles from his targeted women. After cheating the women, he was escaping to Dubai to spend some time there.

He was nabbed through a trap laid by the police in which a a lady officer played a key role. The lady officer interacted with Samal as part of the plan and trapped Samal.

Polic seized Rs 2 lakh in cash, vehicles, and a bank account with over Rs 1 lakh from the possession of the arrested cheat.

Two victims had lodged complaints against Samal at the Capital Police station alleging that he had duped them of Rs 44 lakh, a car, and a bike.

Samal, residing at Chandrasekhapur area of Bhubaneswar had allegedly cheated the first victim of Rs 36 lakh and a car. He had taken Rs 8 lakh and a bullet from the second victim, said Twin City Police Commissioner Sanjeeb Panda at a press meet.

Police investigation has revealed that Samal was chatting with 49 more girls on the matrimonial website. It is alleged that he had married five women and escaped with their money. Police have seized two marriage agreement documents from Samal’s possession.
