Sonia Gandhi Files Nomination From Rajasthan to Enter Rajya Sabha for 1st Time

Jaipur: Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi filed her nomination papers for the upcoming Rajya Sabha polls from Rajasthan on Wednesday.

Her son Rahul Gandhi, daughter Priyanka Gandhi, former chief minister Ashok Gehlot, PCC chief Govind Singh Dotasra, leader of opposition Tikaram Jully were present with her when she filed her nomination in the Rajasthan Assembly building.

Sonia Gandhi is going to win as the Congress is comfortably placed to win one of the three Rajya Sabha seats from Rajasthan for which elections will be held. This seat will be vacant with the end of Rajya Sabha tenure of former PM Manmohan Singh in April.

It will be 77-year-old Sonia Gandhi’s first entry into the Upper House. She has already served five terms as a Lok Sabha MP.

So, it is evident that Sonia Gandhi, who represents the Rae Bareli constituency in the Lok Sabha is not interested to contest in the next Lok Sabha polls.

She became a Lok Sabha MP for the first time in 1999. A total of 56 members of Rajya Sabha from 15 states are retiring in April and the election to the seats will be held on February 27.
