Tsunami Threat After Powerful Japan Earthquake Has “Largely Passed”: US Agency

Tokyo: A series of powerful earthquakes rocked central Japan on Monday, causing damage and triggering tsunami warnings. However, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center based in Hawaii announced that the “tsunami threat has now largely passed.”

The tremors, including a major 7.6 magnitude earthquake, sent waves exceeding one meter crashing into coastal areas around Ishikawa, Niigata, and Toyama prefectures. Initial warnings urged residents to evacuate to higher ground as a precaution.

While the initial wave surge has subsided, authorities advise remaining vigilant for potential aftershocks and smaller tsunami fluctuations over the next 24 hours. Evacuation orders remain in effect for some coastal areas as officials assess the full extent of the situation.
