Watch: River of 2.2 Liter Wine Flowing through Portugal’s Town, Know Why

A river of red wine flowed through the streets of a small Portuguese town named Sao Lourenco do Bairro when an accident occurred at a distillery.

The amount of red wine that flowed out was massive. According to the New York Post, barrels carrying 600,000 gallons of liquor unexpectedly collapsed in the distillery on Sunday.

The videos of around 2.2 million liters of red wine flowing down the streets of the town went viral on social media. Sao Lourenco do Bairro, a small town with only 2,000 people became famous in no time.

As per an assessment, the wine that spilled out might have filled an Olympic-sized swimming pool. This spillage also caused an environmental alert.

Officials immediately intervened and tried their best to stop the wine flow before it entered the Certima River. The Anadia Fire Department shut off the flood and moved it away from the river. The wine flow was led to a nearby field, New York Post reported.

But the wine flooded a basement at a residence near the distillery as well.
