2 Burnt Alive by Superstitious Villagers in Maharashtra Over Witchcraft Allegation, 15 Arrested

Mumbai: Two persons including a woman were burnt alive by a group of superstitious villagers who alleged the duo to be practitioners of witchcraft in Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli district.

Police have arrested at least 15 persons in connection to this gruesome crime.

On May 1, at a village meeting, some villagers alleged that the two victims were involved in black magic which killed three-and-a-half years old.

The superstitious villagers assaulted the two victims, poured petrol on them, and then set them on fire. The victims were identified as Jamni Devaji Telami (52) and Deshu Katia Atlami (57).

Local police have arrested fifteen persons in relation the case. They were booked

under sections 302, 307, 201, 143, 147, 149, and Sub-Section 3 (2) of the Maharashtra Prevention of Human Sacrifice and Other Practices of Witchcraft Act.
