New High-Security Jail Only for Terrorists Being Constructed in Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar: An extremely high-security prison meant only for arrested terrorists is being constructed in the Dambra region of Mahanpur in the Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir. This proposed high-security jail will have the capacity to lodge 600 prisoners. Dambra is 50km away from the international border, so it is out of reach of possible drone attacks.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced this special jail in the Parliament. It is being built with an expenditure of Rs 105 crore.

At present, there are 14 jails in Jammu and Kashmir. They include 2 Central Jails, 10 District Jails, 1 Special Jail, and 1 Sub Jail. They are now housing over 5,300 inmates.

In 2022, the J&K government transferred over 300 kanals of land to the Prisons Department for the construction of this high-security prison.
