Smuggling Rs 1.49 Cr Worth of Diamonds in Tea Pouches, 1 arrested in Mumbai

Mumbai: A man trying to smuggle Rs 1.49 crore worth of diamonds out of the country by hiding them in tea powder pouches was arrested by Customs department officials at the Mumbai international airport.

The 30-year-old accused identified as Mukkim Raza Ashraf was arrested on Wednesday while he was about to board a flight to Dubai.

Inspection of his handbag revealed 34 diamonds hidden in eight small pouches of a branded tea powder. The diamonds weighed 1,559.68 carats and were worth Rs 1.49 crore.

Ironically, Mansuri was promised Rs 5,000 for smuggling the diamonds out of the country.
