12 Hospitalized Following Ammonia Gas Leak from Pipeline in Tamil Nadu

Chennai: Around 12 persons were hospitalized because of an ammonia gas leak from the pipeline of a private company in Tamil Nadu’s Ennore late Tuesday night.

This gas leak occurred in the pipeline of Coromandel International Limited, a fertilizer manufacturer that uses ammonia as a raw material.

It is suspected that this ammonia gas leak took place during the pre-cooling operation of the pipeline sometime after midnight.

Inhabitants of adjoining Periyakuppam, Chinnakuppam villages complained of a pungent smell, breathing difficulty and uneasiness.

Local police and the district administration arranged ambulances and other vehicles to transport the inhabitants in the proximity of the leaking pipeline safe places.

According to police sources, 12 villagers were admitted to the Stanley Hospital following the gas leak. All of them were out of danger.

The gas leak was contained by the company after a few hours. The Tamil Nadu Pollution Board Control team also rushed to the area to check the ammonia level in the ambient air.
