India Records 23 Covid Deaths, No Mask Mandates or Travel Restrictions For Now: Reports

New Delhi: India saw a spike in COVID-19 cases, recording 358 fresh infections in the past 24 hours, as reported by the Union Health Ministry. The surge is linked to the JN.1 sub-variant, initially detected in Kerala. Government sources anticipate a rise in cases during the winter months but currently rule out travel restrictions, mask mandates, or compulsory third doses.

The JN.1 variant, described as a “subtype of a subtype,” is considered less severe than previous strains, reducing the need for stringent measures. Despite 23 coronavirus-linked deaths in the past two weeks, authorities emphasize the importance of targeted testing over mandatory RT-PCR tests at airports.

Key affected regions include Kerala, Karnataka, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra, contributing to the uptick. The national recovery rate stands at 98.81%, with 4,44,70,576 individuals having recovered from the virus. The death toll reached 5,33,327, with recent deaths reported in Kerala.

Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya chaired a meeting to address the sudden increase in cases, stressing the need for joint efforts between the Centre and states. He urged regular mock drills and information sharing to enhance preparedness against emerging strains.

India has reported 21 cases of the JN.1 variant, according to NITI Aayog member Dr. V K Paul. Emphasizing the mild nature of the infection and the effectiveness of available treatments, he called for increased testing and surveillance.

States are taking proactive measures to handle potential scenarios. West Bengal continues surveillance of influenza-like illness and respiratory infections, aligning with central guidelines. Gujarat’s Health Minister advises vigilance but discourages panic, noting only 13 active cases in the state. Delhi’s Health Minister assures preparedness, reviewing essential resources such as oxygen cylinders and ventilator beds.
