President Murmu Launches First India-Made Gene Therapy For Cancer

Mumbai: President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday launched India’s first home-grown gene therapy for cancer at IIT Bombay, marking a significant milestone for the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

Dubbed as “CAR-T cell therapy,” this breakthrough treatment offers accessible and affordable options in the fight against cancer, heralding a new ray of hope for patients worldwide.

President Murmu emphasized the therapy’s significance, hailing it as one of the most remarkable advancements in medical science. While previously available only in developed nations at exorbitant costs, India’s version stands out as the world’s most affordable CAR-T cell therapy.

The collaboration between the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, Tata Memorial Hospital, and industry partner ImmunoACT has paved the way for this achievement, showcasing a commendable synergy between academia and industry.

Recognizing IIT Bombay’s global stature in technology education, President Murmu commended the institution’s focus on research and development, highlighting the transformative potential of such collaborations in driving India’s technological progress.
