EU Bans TikTok On Official Devices Over Cybersecurity Threats

Brussels: The European Union Commission on Thursday banned the use of the Chinese short video-sharing app TikTok on corporate phones.

The development was confirmed by EU industry chief Thierry Breton, who cited a focus on cybersecurity behind the move.

“To increase its cybersecurity, the Commission’s Corporate Management Board has decided to suspend the use of the TikTok application on its corporate devices and on personal devices enrolled in the Commission mobile device service,” the EU executive was quoted by Reuters as saying.

“This measure aims to protect the Commission against cybersecurity threats and actions which may be exploited for cyber-attacks against the corporate environment of the Commission,” he said.

Meanwhile, the EU said no pressure from the United States was involved in the decision to ask employees to remove TikTok from their corporate phones.
