Nancy Pelosi reaches Taiwan’s parliament amid China’s protests, will also meet the President

US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi reached the Parliament of Taiwan this morning. She will also meet President Tsai Ing-wen there. According to media reports, this meeting between the two will take place at 8 am IST. Let us tell you that Nancy reached Taipei on the evening of Tuesday 2nd August amid heavy protests from Beijing.

China’s foreign ministry in Beijing warned before her arrival in Taipei that the US would “pay a heavy price” if Pelosi came to Taiwan. China’s Assistant Foreign Minister and Spokesperson Hua Chunying said China would “take strong measures.” While China’s military said it would launch “a series of targeted military action” in response to Pelosi’s visit.

Meanwhile, 21 Chinese military aircraft took off in the southwest of Taiwan’s Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) shortly after Pelosi landed in Taipei on Tuesday. According to the news agency ANI, this has also been confirmed by the Ministry of National Defense (MND) of Taiwan.

The Defense Ministry said on Twitter, “21 PLA aircraft (J-11*8, J-16*10, KJ-500 AEW&C, Y-9 EW and Y-8 ELINT) stuck south-west of Taiwan on August 2, 2022.” In response, Taiwan launched a combat air patrol, sent radio warnings and deployed defense missile systems to track Chinese military aircraft, the MND said.
