World’s First Sikh Court Opens in London for Family & Civil Disputes

London: British Sikh lawyers have inaugurated a pioneering court tailored to address disputes within the Sikh community in the UK. The initiative, spearheaded by Baldip Singh, aims to provide an alternative dispute resolution platform aligning with Sikh principles.

Contrary to being a religious tribunal, the court seeks to aid Sikh families in navigating conflicts while upholding Sikh values. Operating from London, it boasts a diverse team of around 30 magistrates and 15 judges, with a notable representation of women.

Scheduled to commence operations formally on June 1, 2024, the court will blend remote and in-person proceedings. Magistrates will serve as mediators, fostering dialogue between disputing parties and guiding them to relevant support services, including those addressing domestic violence and substance abuse, available in both Punjabi and English.

While the court’s decisions under the Arbitration Act hold legal binding, participation remains entirely voluntary, requiring mutual consent from both parties.
