UK to Ban Mobile Phones in Schools to Enhance Classroom Focus

London: UK authorities have announced a ban on mobile phones across all schools in an effort to bolster student focus and behaviour during class time. Education Secretary Gillian Keegan emphasized that the move aims to “minimize disruption and improve behaviour in classrooms.”

The Department for Education has issued comprehensive guidance to ensure uniformity in enforcing the ban across all schools in England. The directive mandates the prohibition of mobile phone use throughout the school day, including breaks and lunchtimes. It outlines four possible scenarios for implementation, ranging from requiring students to leave their devices at home to storing them securely during school hours.

Students found in violation of the ban will face detention or confiscation of their phones. The government believes that limiting mobile phone usage can encourage more active and face-to-face socialization among students, thereby positively impacting their mental health.

While the decision rests with individual school headteachers, Education Secretary Keegan emphasizes the importance of providing clarity and consistency in managing mobile phone usage across schools. Keegan reiterated that schools are places for learning, and mobile phones pose an unnecessary distraction in the classroom, equipping teachers with the tools necessary to focus on their primary task: teaching.
