Odisha Schools Prepare for Heatwave, Education Dept Rolls Out Guidelines

Bhubaneswar: In view of rising temperatures predicted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Odisha School and Mass Education Department has issued a directive to officials outlining preventive measures to tackle potential heatwaves during the summer season.

The department has advised Directors and District Education Officers (DEOs) across the state to ensure strict adherence to the guidelines issued by the State Relief Commissioner (SRC) on February 21st. These guidelines emphasize safeguarding student and staff well-being in schools, colleges, and other educational institutions.

Key Measures to Combat Heatwave:

  • Enhanced Water Availability: Schools and colleges are instructed to prioritize ensuring adequate and uninterrupted access to clean drinking water. This may involve repairing existing tube wells within school premises.
  • Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) Stockpile: Sufficient ORS packets are to be readily available in schools and colleges for students and staff who might require them.
  • Restricting Outdoor Activities: To minimize exposure to extreme heat, outdoor activities will be restricted to ensure the safety of students.
  • Parental Awareness: Schools are encouraged to inform parents about the importance of students carrying water bottles throughout the school day.
  • Heatwave Awareness Sessions: Schools may integrate short educational sessions into their curriculum to educate students on precautionary measures against heatwaves.
