Article 370 Abrogation Anniversary: Amarnath Yatra Suspended For A Day In J&K

Jammu: The Amarnath Yatra from Jammu to Kashmir was suspended for one day on Monday as a precautionary security measure, coinciding with the 5th anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370.

Authorities did not specify the exact reasons for the suspension, but it is believed to be a measure to maintain public order on this significant date.

On Sunday, a convoy of 1,112 pilgrims departed from Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas en route to the Valley. However, movement was halted on Monday, and no new groups were allowed to proceed.

The abrogation of Article 370 by Parliament on August 5, 2019, ended Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and led to its reorganisation into two separate union territories: Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. This change aligned J&K with the rest of India’s states and union territories, repealing several local laws and granting new rights to various groups.

The BJP marks the anniversary as ‘Ekatma Mahotsav,’ while the Congress refers to it as a “black day” for J&K.

Meanwhile, political leaders from the PDP and DPAP have announced protests against the bifurcation and the denial of statehood to the former state.
