Hyderabad: The BRS (Bharatiya Rashtra Samithi) in Telangana has filed a complaint with the Election Commission (EC), accusing the Congress party of utilizing ‘deepfake’ videos to generate fake, misleading content targeting BRS President K Chandrasekhar Rao and other key party figures involved in the state’s Assembly elections.
In the formal complaint addressed to the Chief Election Commissioner, Telangana Chief Electoral Officer, and the state DGP on Wednesday, the BRS alleged the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) of being “involved” in producing and circulating “fake audio and video” content using ‘deepfake’ technology and artificial intelligence.
The manipulated content purportedly features prominent BRS leaders such as KCR, K T Rama Rao, Minister Harish Rao, MLC K Kavitha, and other party candidates. The BRS is urging swift action against what they consider the unlawful use of technology by the TPCC.
The complaint states, “We anticipate that this manipulated content is likely to be circulated across various social media platforms. We urge you to take necessary actions to identify and restrain the TPCC and its various legal, non-legal, and invisible handlers from creating and disseminating such misleading content in media format, including but not limited to images, videos, and memes.”
In response, Kavitha took to the platform formerly known as Twitter, now referred to as X, cautioning voters to stay vigilant against fake news. She emphasized the importance of verifying information before believing or sharing it, stating, “Our democracy thrives on informed choices, not misinformation.”
