Government Of India Formulates Millet Export Action Plan

New Delhi: The Government of India on Thursday prepared an action plan to encourage millets exports. In order to promote exports and the global promotion of Indian millets, the government has planned to facilitate the participation of exporters, farmers, and dealers in 16 international trade expos and Buyer Seller Meets.

The action plan calls for involving Indian embassies overseas in the branding and promotion of Indian millets. This includes identifying potential customers, such as department stores, supermarkets, and hypermarkets, in order to set up direct collaborations and business-to-business contacts.

The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority has planned to present millets and its value-added product at several international venues as part of the marketing of Indian millets.

2023 has been designated as the International Year of Millets by the United Nations. With an estimated 41 percent of the worldwide millets production, India is one of the top producers in the world. In 2021–2022, the nation’s millet production increased by 27% to 15.92 million metric tonnes. The top five millet-producing states in the nation are Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Gujarat. The millets market is predicted to increase from its present size of $9 billion to $12 billion by 2025.
