Hathras Stampede: CJI DY Chandrachud Orders Listing Of PIL Seeking Probe

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has scheduled a hearing for a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking an investigation into the tragic Hathras stampede that claimed 121 lives.

“I have ordered listing of the plea yesterday itself,” Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud said after advocate Vishal Tiwari, the PIL petitioner, requested an urgent hearing.

The petition calls for the formation of a five-member expert committee, overseen by a retired Supreme Court judge, to investigate the incident. Additionally, it urges the Uttar Pradesh government to submit a status report on the July 2 tragedy and take legal action against authorities and officials for alleged negligence.

The deadly stampede occurred during a religious gathering in Phulrai village, Hathras district, where over 2.5 lakh devotees had assembled for a ‘satsang’ led by spiritual leader Baba Narayan Hari, also known as Saakar Vishwahari Bhole Baba.
