If Two Women Want To Live Together They Can: MP High Court

Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh High Court on Friday said that if two women want to live together of their own free will, the court cannot stop them.

The court was hearing a custody plea filed by the father of an 18-year-old girl who had fled home with a 22-year-old woman.

The teen, from the state’s Jabalpur, and the woman she ran away with grew up together since the two were children. They studied together and, over time, became so emotionally attached that they are now not ready to live separately.

When their families came to know, the two ran away. The teen’s father petitioned the high court last month seeking his daughter’s custody.

The father told the court that he had tried to persuade his daughter to stay with the family instead of with her female friend but she did not agree.

The high court accepted the petition and issued a notice to the girl, directing her to appear before it.

Once the girl appeared before the court, she was given an hour to decide. But, she appealed to live with her friend.

The girl is an adult, the court said, adding, “You can take the decisions of your life on your own.”
