India Gives Strong Rebuttal to China’s Opposition of G20 Meeting in Kashmir

New Delhi: India has delivered a strong response to China’s opposition to hosting the G20 tourism working group meeting in Kashmir, asserting its right to hold meetings on its own territory. India emphasized the importance of peace and tranquillity on its border for maintaining normal relations with neighbouring countries.

China had previously boycotted the G20 meeting in Srinagar, citing concerns over its location in a “disputed territory.” Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wang Wenbin stated at a press conference that China firmly opposes holding any G20 meetings on disputed territory and would not attend such meetings. Turkey and Saudi Arabia have also not registered for the event.

The upcoming G20 meeting in Kashmir, scheduled from May 22 to 24, is anticipated to be one of the largest international events held in the region since the abrogation of Article 370. Despite objections from Pakistan, India has dismissed concerns and highlighted that similar events are organized in all states and Union Territories ahead of the summit in New Delhi in September.

The Ministry of External Affairs reiterated India’s clear position on the matter, emphasizing that the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir and the Union Territory of Ladakh are integral and inalienable parts of India. The ministry stated that no other country has the right to comment on this issue.

The event in Kashmir will showcase the handicrafts, arts, and cultural heritage of the region. Various cultural events are planned, and the main proceedings will take place at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Conventional Centre (SKICC) situated on the picturesque Dal Lake. With over 100 delegates expected from G20 member states and guest countries, the event promises to be significant.
