India’s First Elevated Eight-Lane Dwarka Expressway Nears Completion

New Delhi: India’s first elevated eight-lane access control expressway, the Dwarka Expressway, is nearing completion and is expected to be fully operational by April 2024. This impressive infrastructure project spans a length of 29.6 kilometres and is being constructed at a cost of Rs 9000 crore. The Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, recently provided an update on the progress of the expressway during an inspection visit.

The Dwarka Expressway is designed to be 34 meters wide and is being built on a single pillar, covering 18.9 kilometres in Haryana and 10.1 kilometres in Delhi. During the inspection, Gadkari was accompanied by several dignitaries, including Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinay Kumar Saxena, Union Minister of State General VK Singh, Union Minister of State Rao Inderjit Singh, MP Pravesh Singh Verma, and MP Ramesh Bidhuri.

Gadkari highlighted that the expressway comprises a road network with four distinct levels. These include a flyover constructed over a tunnel, underpass, grade road, elevated road, and flyover sections. Additionally, a 3-lane service road is being developed on both sides of the expressway to enhance accessibility.

Notably, the expressway will feature the country’s widest 8-lane tunnel, stretching over a length of 3.6 kilometres in Delhi. This tunnel will significantly enhance connectivity for residents of Haryana and West Delhi, particularly in relation to the Indira Gandhi International Airport.

Gadkari emphasized that the Dwarka Expressway will intersect major roads in Haryana, including Pataudi Road (SH-26) near Harsaru and Farukhnagar (SH-15A) near Basai. Furthermore, it will intersect the Delhi-Rewari rail line near Gurgaon Sector-88 (B) and UER-II at Bharthal. The expressway will establish connections between various sectors of Gurgaon, such as Sector-21, with Sector-88, 83, 84, 99, 113, and Dwarka to Global City.

To enhance efficiency and convenience, the entire expressway will be equipped with an Intelligent Transport System (ITS) facility. This technological integration will contribute to improved traffic management and the overall transportation experience for commuters.

With its impressive features and comprehensive connectivity, the Dwarka Expressway is poised to become a crucial transportation artery, facilitating seamless travel for residents and visitors alike. Its completion by April 2024 will mark a significant milestone in India’s infrastructure development.
