India Witnesses Impressive Growth in Tiger Population, Surging from 1,411 to 3,682 Since 2006

New Delhi: India’s tiger population has seen significant growth, rising from 1,411 in 2006 to 3,682 in 2022, according to data provided by Union Minister G Kishan Reddy in the Lok Sabha.

To protect the tiger and peacock, they have been designated as the ‘National Animal’ and ‘National Bird,’ respectively, with the highest level of safeguarding under the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972. These animals’ habitats have been declared as Protected Areas to ensure their conservation.

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF & CC) had previously notified tiger and peacock as national symbols, but due to discrepancies in the official records, they were renotified on May 30, 2011. The government’s efforts have led to a commendable increase in the tiger population, a testament to the conservation initiatives in place.

This move to provide special status and protection to these animals reflects the government’s consideration of the sentiments of the common people across the country. As ‘National Animal’ and ‘National Bird,’ tigers and peacocks hold immense cultural and ecological significance, and their preservation is of utmost importance to India’s biodiversity.
