India Welcomes UN’s Decision To List Abdul Rehman Makki As Global Terrorist

New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs has welcomed the decision of the UN Security Council (UNSC) to list Pakistan-based militant Abdul Rehman Makki, brother-in-law of Lashkar-e-Taiba leader Hafiz Saeed, as a global terrorist.

MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said the ministry welcomed the decision of the UN Security Council’s ISIL and Al Qaida Sanctions Committee to list LeT terrorist Abdul Rehman Makki. “Makki has occupied various leadership roles in LeT, including raising funds for the organisation,” said Bagchi.

Stating how threats from terrorist organisations in the region remain high, Bagchi said listings and sanctions by the UNSC are an effective tool to curb such threats and dismantle terror infrastructure in the region.

“India remains committed to pursuing a zero-tolerance approach to terrorism and will continue to press the international community to take credible, verifiable and irreversible action against terrorism,” said MEA’s official spokesperson.

In a statement issued on Monday, the UN Security Council said, “On 16 January 2023, the Security Council Committee pursuant to resolutions… concerning ISIL (Da’esh), Al-Qaida, and associated individuals, groups, undertakings and entities approved the addition of the entry specified below to its ISIL (Da’esh) and Al-Qaida Sanctions List of individuals and entities subject to the assets freeze, travel ban and arms embargo set out in…Security Council resolution 2610 (2021) and adopted under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations.”

Abdul Rehman Makki and other LeT/JUD operatives have been involved in raising funds, recruiting and radicalizing youth to violence and planning attacks in India, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir.
