Airbus to Deliver First C-295 to IAF Today: Redefining India’s Aerial Capabilities

New Delhi: The Indian Air Force (IAF) is set to welcome its first C-295 transport aircraft today, a milestone moment in a significant 2021 contract that will see India acquire a total of 56 such aircraft. Manufactured by Airbus in Seville, Spain, the C-295MW aircraft boasts a remarkable capacity of 5-10 tonnes, equivalent to approximately 70 soldiers, and will serve as a vital replacement for the aging Avro aircraft in the IAF’s fleet.

One standout feature of the C-295 is its rear ramp door, facilitating swift troop and cargo deployments, making it a valuable asset for quick reaction and para-dropping operations. Furthermore, all 56 aircraft in this contract will be equipped with an indigenous electronic warfare suite, enhancing their capabilities.

In addition to its impressive cargo capacity and deployment capabilities, the C-295 brings versatility to the table. It can operate from short runways, requiring just 670 meters for take-off and a mere 320 meters for landing. This feature makes it ideal for delivering essential supplies to remote and hilly regions that may have limited infrastructure.

The aircraft’s endurance is also noteworthy, capable of flying for approximately 11 hours at a speed of around 480 kilometers per hour. Sixteen of these aircraft are slated for delivery within 48 months from Spain, while the remaining 40 will be manufactured in Vadodara, Gujarat, as part of a joint venture between Tata and Airbus, with completion expected within a decade from the contract signing date.

This venture represents a significant step forward in India’s aviation manufacturing capabilities, aligning with the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan (self-reliant India initiative) and aiming to reduce import dependency in the realm of military aircraft. In essence, it signifies a noteworthy stride towards strengthening India’s defense capabilities while fostering domestic aerospace production.
