Jail Inmates Get Smart Cards To Stay In Touch with Families, Lawyers in M’rashtra

Mumbai: In a progressive move, authorities at Harsul Central Jail in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar City, Maharashtra, have introduced smart cards to facilitate communication between nearly 650 inmates and their families and legal representatives.

As per an official statement released today, each inmate will be granted the opportunity to make three free calls per week, with each call lasting up to six minutes. This initiative aims to bridge the communication gap often faced by incarcerated individuals and their loved ones, especially in cases where financial constraints hinder personal visits.

The smart cards offer a vital lifeline, allowing inmates to maintain regular contact with their families and legal advisors. Additionally, a calling booth has been installed within the prison premises to ensure convenient access for both prisoners and those in judicial custody.

While the release highlights the significance of this endeavour, it does not specify whether the calls are restricted to pre-approved numbers provided to the authorities or if inmates have the freedom to dial any number of their choice.

Harsul Central Jail, recognized as one of the nine central correctional facilities in Maharashtra, demonstrates a commitment to enhancing inmate welfare and fostering connections with the outside world through this forward-thinking initiative.
