Khap Panchayat Leaders Want Govt to Ban Same-Sex Marriage, Live-In Relations

New Delhi: At a ‘mahapanchayat’ of around 300 khap panchayats held on Sunday in Haryana’s Jind, the leaders threatened to stage a massive protest if government did not impose a ban on live-in relationships and same-sex marriages.

Leaders of hap Panchayats from Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh attended this ‘mahapanchayat’ meeting.

The khap leaders said that they were not against the love marriage, but the parents’ consent is a must.

Apart from same-sex marriage, the khap panchayats are also against “marriage within the same gotra (clan)”.

The khap panchayat representatives have decided to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi and pressure the government to amend the laws to ban same-sex marriages, live-in relations and same gotra marriages.

A 51-member committee is being constituted for the purpose.
