Nirav Modi to be extradited to India

London: London High Court on Wednesday ordered diamond merchant Nirav Modi’s extradition to India.

According to reports, Modi will face charges of fraud and money laundering, amounting to an estimated USD 2 billion in the Punjab National Bank (PNB) loan scam case.

Hearing Modi’s plea against extradition to India, Lord Justice Jeremy Stuart-Smith and Justice Robert Jay noted that India is a “friendly foreign power” and the UK must honour its extradition treaty obligations by not picking holes in the Indian government’s assurances that Nirav Modi will be provided with adequate medical care at Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai.

Reportedly Modi fled India when the PNB scam was unearthed and a multi-agency probe began. Currently, he remains behind bars at Wandsworth prison in London.

Meanwhile, Nirav Modi’s defence team also accused the Indian media of being vitriolic against him and highlighted how the public burnt his effigies.
