SC Dismisses Petition Filed By Oppositions On ‘Misuse’ Of Central Agencies By Centre

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to entertain a plea by 14 Opposition parties over the ‘misuse’ of central agencies by the Centre. The apex court also asked the petitioners to cite a specific case.

According to reports, last month, 14 parties, including the Congress, DMK, RJD, BRS and the TMC, moved to the Supreme Court, alleging the misuse of central probe agencies such as the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to frame their leaders.

The apex court on Wednesday rejected the plea and asked the 14 Opposition parties to cite a specific case.

The court said abstract guidelines cannot be laid down in this manner.

“Laying down general guidelines without having relation to facts of the case will be dangerous. We can’t make separate guidelines for politicians,” the top court stated.

“Learned counsel seeks permission to withdraw the plea at this stage. The petition is accordingly dismissed as withdrawn,” the bench ordered.

“You please come back to us when you have an individual criminal case or group of cases,” the bench said.

Sensing the disinclination on the part of the top court in entertaining the plea, senior advocate AM Sighvi, appearing for the political parties, sought permission to withdraw the petition.
