Supreme Court Rejects PIL Seeking Digital Monitoring of MPs, MLAs Round-the-Clock

New Delhi: Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud dismissed a petition requesting digital monitoring of all Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs). The petitioner, Surinder Kundra, advocated for the installation of CCTVs to monitor politicians around the clock, with footage accessible to all citizens via mobile phones.

Chief Justice Chandrachud rebuffed the request, questioning the infringement on the privacy rights of elected officials. He emphasized that MPs and MLAs also possess a right to privacy, dismissing the notion of digitally monitoring them as impractical and unconstitutional.

Despite initially warning Kundra of a ₹5 lakh penalty for the purported loss of public time, Chief Justice Chandrachud ultimately refrained from imposing costs. He cautioned Kundra against filing similar petitions in the future, urging him not to waste the court’s time.
