Gangtok: The Chief Minister of Sikkim, Prem Singh Tamang, has blamed the previous state government for the catastrophic destruction of the Chungthang Dam, a 1200 MW hydroelectric project. The dam was washed away in flash floods triggered by a glacial lake outburst from South Lhonak Lake, resulting in widespread devastation.
Chief Minister Tamang stated that the “sub-standard” construction by the former Sikkim Democratic Front government, which held power for over two decades, is to blame for the tragedy that has claimed 20 lives so far.
He also highlighted “major damage” reported from across the state, including roads and bridges being washed away.
Despite challenges posed by bad weather, Chief Minister Tamang pledged to collaborate with the central government to airlift relief and rescue teams, with the immediate priority being the rescue of around 3,000 stranded tourists.
The flash floods, which swept through Sikkim early Wednesday, have resulted in at least 20 fatalities, including seven soldiers, and the destruction of farms and villages. Over 100 people, including 15 Army personnel, remain missing. Approximately 2,500 individuals have been evacuated, with nearly 6,000 relocated to relief camps.
Additionally, the Sikkim government has issued warnings about the potential for another glacial lake outburst, particularly for Shako Cho Lake near Lachen, leading to the evacuation of residents from surrounding areas. Furthermore, authorities caution against “stray explosions” following the flooding of an Army ammunitions depot, where two individuals have already lost their lives due to washed-away explosives.
