Tipra Motha Party Joins BJP-Led Tripura Govt in Political Shake-up

Agartala: Tripura witnessed a significant political development as two new ministers, Animesh Debbarma and Brishaketu Debbarma, both from the Tipra Motha Party (TMP), were sworn in by Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu on Thursday. The ceremony, held at Raj Bhavan’s Durbar Hall, was attended by Chief Minister Manik Saha, his council, and senior officials.

The inclusion of TMP in the BJP-led coalition government marks a crucial shift in Tripura politics after a year-long negotiation and a recent tripartite agreement signed with the Centre and state government. Animesh Debbarma, formerly the Opposition leader, resigned from his position to join the cabinet alongside Brishaketu Debbarma, both taking their oath in the tribal language ‘Kokborok.’

This expansion follows the alliance’s second consecutive term in power since March 8 last year, with one ministerial post remaining vacant even after Wednesday’s appointments. Notably, the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) remains a key ally in the coalition, with MLA Sukla Charan Noatia serving as a cabinet minister.

TMP’s electoral performance in the last assembly polls, securing 13 seats with a focus on the ‘Greater Tipraland’ demand, has solidified its position as the principal opposition party.
