6.8 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Indonesia

An earthquake of 6.8 magnitude on the Richter scale occurred in Indonesia’s eastern province of North Maluku on Friday morning. But no casualty or damages have been reported. Indonesia sits on a vulnerable quake-hit zone called “the Pacific Ring of Fire”.

The earthquake hit at 03:02 a.m. local time Friday (20:02 GMT Thursday). Its epicenter was located 133 km northwest of the Morotai Island district at a depth of 112 km under the seabed. Luckily it did not set off a tsunami, Indonesia’s meteorology, climatology, and geophysics agency said.

The tremors of the earthquake were felt in the adjoining province of North Sulawesi. As per the reports so far, this earthquake did not cause damage to buildings or infrastructure facilities.

Residents in the Morotai Island district felt the tremors, but there was no major panic.
