Brazil ex-prez Bolsonaro’s supporters run riot; takeover Congress, Supreme Court, Presidential Building

Supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro broke into the country’s congressional building, Supreme Court, and presidential palace on Sunday. Till now there have been no reports of deaths or injuries during this political violence. Meanwhile, Brazillian police have made around 400 arrests. The government buildings have been cleared up.

This incident in Brazil seemed to be a repeat of what happened in Capitol Hill in the US two years back. Supporters of rightist leader Bolsonaro’s supporters on Sunday night barged into the government buildings. They defaced Brazil’s presidential palace, took over the Congress, and ransacked ceremonial rooms in the Supreme Court in Brazil’s capital Brasilia.

This violent demonstration comes a week after the new President of Brazil, Lula da Silva, who defeated Bolsonaro in an election on October 30, took charge. Bolsonaro challenged the election results.

President Lula da Silva said everyone involved in the Brasilia riot would be tracked down and punished. He termed the protestors fascists and fanatical Nazis. Several world leaders condemned the incidents in Brazil. US President Joe Biden termed the events as an “assault on democracy and on the peaceful transfer of power. “
