Circus’ Grandsire Gemini Sankaran Passes Away at 99

Pioneer of the Indian circus industry and founder of the famous Gemini circus, Gemini Sankaran, breathed his last on Monday in Kannur of Kerala at the advanced age of 99. He was suffering from age-related problems.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who was close to this circus pioneer expressed grief over his death and said, “He played a major role in modernising the Indian circus and included foreign performers and their tricks.”

Sankaran also was close to several prime ministers, presidents, and other celebrities.

Born in 1924, Sankaran was trained for three years by noted circus artist Keeleri Kunhikannan. He served in the military during the Second World War. After retiring from the military, he preferred to work for circus troupes.

In 1951, he bought up Vijaya Circus Company and renamed it Gemini Circus. He also started his second circus company named Jumbo Circus. The Central government honoured him with a lifetime achievement award for his immense contribution to the circus in the country.

His last rites will be held at Payyambalam Beach on Tuesday.
